The key of D is another key that works well on guitar. It’s personally one of my favorites. Keys that start with open chords generally work well on guitar. We call these open keys. D is unique since it’s the smallest open chord. It only uses four strings. 

Of course you can always use a fifth or sixth string D barre chord to make it sound bigger (and different).
