Using Bar chords

Hi, I have been practicing guitar for over 5 months now. New to RGS and am loving it! I have gone back to the beginning but after a few of those lessons practice chords. I can play chords to songs and my transitions are getting better and faster. I am having a hard time with bar chords! I know there are alternates but I don’t want to go the easy route if bar chords are necessary. I am learning a song now with many F chords with fast changes in between. Should I be using the alternate for songs like this? Do professionals use the bar chord? Thanks
