If you were to watch a guitar player strum through chords, you’ll notice that their arm doesn’t stop. No matter the strumming pattern their arm is always in a down-up motion. This is what I like to call the Pendulum.
This is the key to unlocking almost every strumming pattern. Even if you add dynamics, muted strums, or don’t hit the strings on every ‘down’ or ‘up’. Your strumming arm is running like a machine.

These lessons are very important.
Ah yes, a pendulum but with a loose and flexible wrist. Strumming and rhythm…..often overlooked by beginners, like myself. So essential to progress on the guitar. As for strumming patterns, once you get into the groove, you find your own space and rhythm. When I started, I learned with the traditional method of the arrows showing the up and down sequences. Then I closed my eyes, and found the strumming patterns so much easier to feel and play. And then you just strum away and don’t even give a second thought……Take the song A Horse with No Name for example……as soon as you add the shuffle strum, the song comes alive……
Simple explanation for the basic foundation for such an important topic! keep up the good work!
Thanks Leif Christian.
