Even though this exercise is a simplified fingerpicking pattern, it sounds really intricate and melodic. It’s based around a traditional Flamenco chord progression. One very cool thing about this is that it’s in 3/4 (three-four) time. That means there are only 3 beats in every measure instead of the more common 4. This small difference gives the progression a much different feel.

I actually prefer the thumb to play the D string, but I’m kind of used to Travis picking.
