Scale Up, Step Down
VIDEO
Welcome to day one of this week’s guitar adventure! We’re diving into something special—combining chords and melody notes to create a beautiful instrumental piece. This week, you’ll discover how to blur the line between rhythm and lead playing, much like legends Tommy Emmanuel and Chet Atkins. By the end, you’ll have a fresh set of skills to make your guitar truly sing.
Today, we’re kicking things off with a technique exercise called “Scale Up, Scale Down.” This one’s all about building finger memory for the melody notes we’ll use throughout the week. Don’t worry if it feels a bit tricky at first—that just means you’re growing. Even 5-10 minutes of focused practice will do wonders for your playing.
Run through the exercise a few times before bed and again in the morning—you’ll be amazed at how muscle memory kicks in overnight. Rest up and get ready for day two, where we’ll dive into the main lick of the tune.

Bravo! Looking forward to this week!
Looking forward to seeing where the lessons go this week. I don’t remember doing these before. Sounds interesting coming back down the scale with the pentatonic.
Love Chet Atkins and Tommy Emmanuel. Kent Nishimura is another player with a similar style, I believe.
