Being able to find the octave of a note will help you memorize the fretboard quicker. Not just for finding the octave, but for finding other intervals and notes around the octave.
This exercise will help you visualize the octave interval. It also happens to be a great warm-up exercise!

I’m glad you appreciate it, Paul. I first learned a version of this exercise from my Classical guitar teacher in college. learn where the octaves are really helped me move around the guitar fretboard.
