When the Night Comes
VIDEO
Today, we’re diving into the chord progression for Stand By Me—a classic I-vi-IV-V progression in the key of G. That’s G major, E minor, C major, and D major. This pattern shows up everywhere, from Unchained Melody to Every Breath You Take and beyond, so getting comfortable with it is a huge win.
To keep things fresh, we’re swapping out the traditional C major chord for a Cadd9. Don’t let the fancy name fool you—it’s just a simple tweak that gives the progression a fuller, more modern sound, and your fingers will thank you for it.
We’ll start by walking through the chords, then move into a steady down-strum pattern—two measures per chord. No rush, just focus on getting those transitions smooth. Once that’s feeling good, we’ll add the strumming pattern from Monday’s session to tie everything together.
